My Better Half - Nate + Katie-01

Nate and Katie! Oh how fond I am of these two. What a joy it has been to work with each of them this past year on Kinfolk. They are such a good team...and together, I think they can do anything. Honestly. They are humanitarians, they are artists (scroll to see driftwood creations, beautiful stationery and breathtaking photography), music lovers (love their playlists!), and entrepreneurs (founders of Kinfolk Magazine). I am grateful to call them friend.

Side note: Sometimes, when I look over Cree's shoulder, I find him looking up houses for sale in Portland....I'm pretty sure he wants to be neighbors. Yes please!

Thank you Nate and Katie for being a part of My Better Half!

KATIE
1. Cries during every episode of Parenthood.
2. Hasn't grown since the seventh grade.
3. Dreams of someday opening a teashop.

NATHAN
1. Sleeps with ear plugs every night.
2. Can build anything with driftwood and hot glue.
3. Dreams of being a cellist like Yo-Yo Ma.

THEIR STORY
They met while going to school in Hawaii three years ago. Nate worked at the university newspaper right next to the games center where Katie worked. He says he walked by her counter enough times to memorize her work schedule before he had the guts to say "hello". They dated for three quick months before they were engaged, then married later in Canada. They're now living in a sleepy coastal town in Oregon where they work on Kinfolk together.

My Better Half - Brittany + Paul-01

It's day 3, and we have Brittany and Paul Jepsen! Cree and I just spent a week at their cozy home in Copenhagen. Not only did we fall head over heels in love with the city, we fell in love with these two! They are so. much. fun. They are both the sweetest hosts, and to be honest...I don't think we've laughed that hard in months. In fact, I cried once an evening from laughing too hard.

Brittany works from home blogging for The House That Lars Built and guests blogs for a few others. She also makes paper flowers & home accessories for her Etsy shop and designs custom wedding invitations. Paul works in insurance during the day and writes novels at night.

Thank you Brittany and Paul for being a part of My Better Half!

PAUL
1. Has undiagnosed ADHD resulting in endless amounts of pointing and saying "look at that"
2. Keeps his gargantuan multi-colored sock collection in a huge glass jar.
3. Has cooked 99.999999% of the meals since getting married.

BRITTANY
1. Believes the answer to world peace is flowers.
2. Once won first place AND $10 at a disco roller skating contest. It was all in the shimmy.
3. Can be seen around town rolling a bright red, shiny-cased cello named Clifford. You know, the big red cello.

THEIR STORY (as told by Brittany)
Paul and I met at a church function in July 2009 while I was studying textile design in Copenhagen, Denmark where he lived. He admits to racing down the stairs to meet me after I had left the building, which would explain the ever so slight sheen on his forhead.

Later he took out my two friends and me to Tivoli, the famous amusement park in the center of town. He impressed me with his interests which were unexplainably ever so close to mine. I found out after we were married that he had done his research and found out on Facebook prior to the evening that I played the cello (which would explain why he just "LOVED Yo Yo Ma"), loved Anne of Green Gables ("I love anything with Lucy Maud Montgomery" but he was from Canada, so I figured it was just a national pastime and not weird), and crafted/did artsy things ("I'm really into calligraphy" - which he was).

After I returned to Washington, DC to finish grad school, we continued dating long distance, got engaged in March, I graduated then moved to CA, then we got married in September 2010 when I moved to Copenhagen to be with Paul. We have been here ever since enjoying the Danish summers and hibernating during the winters.

We're easily excited and inspired, and we sometimes drink champagne out of cans and dance in the kitchen to Spanish tunes.

Arian is the filmmaker behind Modshift. Together they make a pretty dynamic couple, huh? They currently live in sunny Los Angeles, California, and I'm looking forward to the day I can meet these talents in person!

My Better Half - Katie + Matt-01

I've been a fan of Katie's blog since I started reading blogs. She is a pure delight—a beautiful photographer, an amazing painter, an awesome mom and to top it all off she has the cutest wardrobe you could ever imagine. She and Matt live in Ohio with Max and their soon to be new little girl! Thank you Katie and Matt for being a part of My Better Half!

MATT
1. Tattoo artist / ordained minister / excessive coffee drinker
2. Has fondness for Kung Fu movies
3. Hasn't had a hair cut in 12 years.

KATIE
1. Collects red lipsticks and rubber erasers
2. Throws a mean party...no occasion or obscure holiday is safe.
3. Has a voice that goes up an octave when excited or talking to her sisters on the phone.

THEIR STORY
We met over coffee for business, as a couple of artists, a few years back and haven't gone a day since without being a pair. We're settled in Ohio...working and painting, making a home and raising our little ones, a boy of 7 and a little lady coming in early July!

Together, we love to sneak out for lunch dates, hide out in antique stores, and stay up late watching terrible TV. It has been a real pleasure finding that one person you can be creative with, go to for silly advice about hair or shoes, and argue over song lyrics with. Finding that lone soul that centers you...who you get to dream up big or simple with. We've gotten lucky in that way.

Thank you Matt and Katie for being a part of My Better Half!
PS. Michigan and Ohio are so close, we really need to plan a get together when we get back to the states!
My Better Half - Erin & Conor-01

Erin Jane and Conor are new parents! You can learn more about their new addition and their life (and work!) in Hawaii on their blog Jane Reaction. Thank you Erin Jane and Conor for being a part of My Better Half!

CONOR
1. Is a crazy good long board surfer. Been doing it his whole life.
2. Cannot get lost. It's like he has google maps memorized.
3. Thunder and lightning make Conor dance and sing.

ERIN JANE
1. Is terrified of sharks, even in swimming pools (yet still manages to surf with Conor almost daily)
2. Has a chocolate oreo milkshake every night before she goes to bed.
3. Has a degree in ceramics.

THEIR STORY (as told by Erin Jane)
I actually fell in love with Conor before I ever really met him in person. A good friend of mine gave me his number because she thought we would get along well. He was living in San Diego at the time and I was in Portland. On a whim I sent him a text. My friend was right. He quickly (and wittily) replied and we started a 2 month long text only relationship. We never spoke on the phone or met in person. It was really exciting to have a secret love interest and always receive these quirky little messages from a stranger. I told my family I was going to marry this guy I was texting. They thought I was nuts. I decided I should probably call him. The conversation was seriously awkward because we were both really nervous. We decided to meet. He flew up one day out of the blue about a week later and presented himself to me on my doorstep. I acted like a complete fool, jumping up and down and shaking my hands like a crazy person. I kissed him and we instantly became friends. We got married in 2010 and moved to Hawaii the next day. We just had our first baby a few months ago—a boy named Henry. He is beautiful!

Thanks Erin Jane and Conor for being a part of My Better Half!

Geneva-01

Geneva. Is. Beautiful. We arrived last week and have spent our first bit exploring, swimming, working (playing catch up!) and trying our hardest to learn some French.

Cree's first day at the UN was last Monday, and he loves it....the research, the work, the people. Everything is right in line with his interests, and for that I am grateful.

Our living situation for the time being is a bit awkward, but we've become experts at making the most of it. It means all of our evenings are spent exploring Geneva, picnicking along the river and taking sunset strolls along the Rhone watching the boats come in. Not half bad huh?

We were also lucky enough to meet the lovely Stephanie Duvall of 70 Percent Pure (just try not to get stuck on her blog for at least a half hour). She kindly invited us on a walking tour and home cooked meal our first weekend here. She took us all over the city...to her favorite parks, shops, restaurants. It was the perfect welcome! She made us feel so at home in Geneva. The only bummer is she only lives here part time, so we can't wait until she returns. I think a picnic will be a must.

I'm still trying to catch up on all the work I ignored while traveling, but in the meantime, I'm going to try to give some travel updates....and of course some much needed My Better Half posts.

Until then, au revoir!
